Setting Up Minn to Match Live Demo

Last updated by David Gwyer on March 8, 2017 16:00

  • If you purchased the Minn developer license we’ll setup Minn for FREE!

Otherwise, we can install and setup Minn for a one-off fee if you don’t want to do it yourself.

When you first install a theme it can feel a little daunting to know what to do first. You already know what the live theme demo looks like and probably want your site to match this as a starting point.

This article covers how to do exactly that. We’ll walk you through how to setup Minn after it is first installed so that it matches the live demo exactly. Let’s get started!

Default Content

After Minn is activated you’ll see a notice prompting you to install some default content. If you click the “Install Default Content” button this will create some basic pages including an about page, contact page, sitemap etc. A sample navigation menu will also be created and assigned as the primary menu.

Minn Activation Prompt

This is OK if you just want a very basic setup but if you want something closer to a working site then you can import the Minn live demo data file instead.

Import the Minn Data File

You can download the Minn demo data file here. Extract the zip file to your computer to a location you can easily find it again (e.g. the main desktop).

In the WordPress admin go to Tools > Import and select WordPress as the type of data to import. You may be prompted to install a plugin to process the imported data (as this functionality isn’t included in WordPress core). Just follow the on-screen prompts to install and activate the plugin until you get to the Import WordPress screen.

Then click Choose File to select the Minn demo data file you previously downloaded. Once selected, click Upload file and import. You’ll now be prompted to import author(s) from the Minn live demo or to assign content to existing users.

Finally, make sure the box is checked to download and import file attachments and click Submit to begin the import process. This can take a few minutes depending on your internet connection.

A message will be displayed when import is complete. Should anything go wrong or you get a lot of failed import messages you can repeat the import process. Sometimes during import if the live demo site is unresponsive or your internet connection drops temporarily this can interfere with the import process.

Let’s Create Your Site!

Now that all the data from the Minn live demo is available you can begin to configure your site. This will mainly involve setting menu locations, adding widget to widget areas, and configuring other individual WordPress settings.

Setting the Front and Blog Pages

Go to Settings > Reading and select A static page (select below) setting. Under the Front page drop down select Front Page 1. Then, under the Posts page drop down select Blog.

Setting up Menus

The imported Minn data file will have created menus but won’t have assigned them to a theme location. Let’s do that now. Go to Appearance > Menus and make sure the Main menu is selected. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and check the Bottom Menu Primary theme location box. This will assign the Main menu to the Bottom Menu Primary theme menu location.

Next, select the Top menu from the drop down and assign it to the Top Menu Primary theme location. Finally, set the Top (logo) menu to the Logo Menu Primary theme location.

Configuring Widget Areas

Go to Appearance > Widgets and you’ll see all the widgets available (left hand side) that you can drag into widget areas (right hand side). We won’t go through every single setting of every widget added to every widget area (that would take forever!) but the main settings are mentioned as we go along. Let’s go through each widget area one-by-one.

If a widget area isn’t mentioned then assume that there are no widgets to be added.

That should cover almost all aspects of setting up Minn to match the live demo. If there is anything missing, or not working as it should, please let me know and I’ll get right on it.
